Becoming a Truck Driver in Germany: 2026 Guide

For those who want to become truck drivers in Germany: 2026 salaries, driving licence recognition, Code 95 training and details of the German driver visa.

Germany, the heart of Europe's trade and industry, cannot breathe without the logistics sector. As of 2026, Germany faces the largest "Fahrermangel" (driver shortage) crisis in its history due to rising retirement rates and the explosion of e-commerce.

Visa and Requirements

  • A valid Class C or CE driving licence (from Türkiye).
  • Official Employment Contract (Arbeitsvertrag): A full-time offer from a logistics company based in Germany.
  • Professional Experience: SGK records or references from previous employers.
  • National work visa application through the consulate.

Driving Licence Recognition (Umschreibung)

Your Class CE driving licence obtained in Türkiye is valid for only 6 months from the day you register your residence (Anmeldung) in Germany. After this period, you cannot legally drive.

To convert a Turkish driving licence into a German one, you usually need to take both the theoretical (through TÜV) and practical (driving) exams. Enrolling in a German driving school (Fahrschule) is mandatory.

Code 95 (BKrFQG) Certificate

To be able to carry out commercial freight transport in Germany and within all EU borders, it is a legal requirement to have "Code 95" on the back of your driving licence.

  • Training (Weiterbildung): 35 hours (5x7) of theoretical training that must be renewed every 5 years.
  • Accelerated process: If you are obtaining it for the first time, a 140-hour course and a 90-minute exam through IHK may be required.
  • Many employers cover these training costs.

Language Proficiency

For the visa, the German Consulate usually requires German at the A2 or B1 level. For operational processes, professional German is essential to agree with loading supervisors (Disponent), read delivery documents (Frachtbrief) and explain yourself during a police stop.
